Celebration - by Art Gilbert

My first post in my new home and if you made it here, I guess it’s working. Lot’s of clean up to do – didn’t go as smoothly as I’d hoped but whatever does?

I’m not married to this theme, we’re just friends icon wink Welcome to my new home! , so expect something different down the road. This should get me up and running. Please let me know what issues you run into….after a few days when I get a chance to clean the mess up first.

Thanks for following me here!!!

    It’s working!! It looks great.

  2. November 18, 2008

Hi Ellen – it’s been a long day. I think it’s coming together, but I feel rummy – I’ve spent so much time in front of the computer.

Thanks for the first comment. You win the prize (not sure what that might be) :-)

  3. November 19, 2008

Yeah, it looks good, Randy! Nice job on the move, and quickly too.

Hey, I think I know where you took that photo on the header! Somehow it looks familiar!

  4. November 19, 2008

Thanks, Bob. I’ve spent WAY too much time on this (and Rechie will definitely confirm that ;-) ).

My latest concern has been the post images, because even though they imported evidently they are still hosted by Blogger and I’ve read that they will not allow that for very long. I’ve tried a plugin (Hot Linked Image Cacher), and I think it worked. Guess I’ll find out in a few days. In the mean time I’m trying to make sure I have a local copy of all them. I sure don’t want to manually load those again but I may have to :-(

I thought the photo from the back porch of the White House made an appropriate header photo, as it is very nearly the view that both of us will enjoy on a daily basis some day in future.

  5. November 19, 2008

I personally can’t wait to wake up in the morning to that view, Randy!

  6. November 19, 2008

Yeah, Bob, I’m with you on that. The one thing I’ve learned as I get older is – time goes by faster every year. So it may seem like a long time to me right now, but I’ll be waking up soon wondering what happened & enjoying that view :-)

  7. November 20, 2008

    Randy,

Nice job on your move to Word Press. Looks real nice.

  8. November 20, 2008

Hi Kevin – thanks for the kind words. I’m starting to get things in place and find my way around a bit. Better get studying for my Bisaya lesson tomorrow, though. Been a little side tracked this week :-)

  9. November 20, 2008

I’m feeling good about my Bisaya lessons again. As I wrote on my blog a while back, I had gone through a period of not studying enough, not doing well, and so forth. I finally got back on track a week or two ago. My lesson the other day went really well, and Bebe even gave me an “A+” which felt good!

  10. November 20, 2008

    Hi Bob -

I’ve had various things going on that have kept me from studying as much as I’d like. I do find that I’m having a difficult time with the basic memorization of words sometimes. My flash cards are really useful in that regard, but I just don’t retain things as well as I used to. Bebe is a great teacher, though, and I highly recommend her to anyone looking to take lessons. I really appreciate all you’ve done to help facilitate our lessons.

  11. November 20, 2008

Hi Randy, I don’t know if it is just me, but all the gravatars are not showing the whole face – we all have no mouths!

  12. November 20, 2008

Hi Ellen – we’ll it seems like it might be an issue with the plugin/gravatars and Explorer. I tried Safari, Firefox and Camino on my Mac and they were all displaying properly. I then tried Firefox and Explorer on WIndows XP. Firefox was fine but Explorer displayed what you are seeing.

I’ll see what I can find out. In the meantime, if you are able to try it in Firefox – let me know.

Update: It appears that it’s not the gravatars themselves but a font alignment issue in Explorer. Not sure what I can do about that at the moment. Maybe the theme author will have an idea?

  13. November 20, 2008

I don’t have firefox, just IE on Vista.

  14. November 20, 2008

Hi Ellen – maybe one of those more versed with WordPress will chime in and give some advice. Looking at this problem was the first time I’ve seen the site on Windows & it looks a lot different (fonts) than it does on the Mac. I don’t like the look much at all on Windows.

Update: I tried it on another Windows XP computer with Explorer and the gravatars worked fine there. I don’t know!! The font look on Windows (especially Firefox) that I didn’t care for was without cleartype enabled. I guess I’m really use to seeing the fonts smoothed my browser.

Update II: The avatar problem is definitely a problem with this theme and IE7. Designer is aware but doesn’t have a fix at this time. I’ve played around with it and have made it even worse for those with IE7, as I made the avatars slightly larger than they were. Not much more I can do at this point other than turn them off or change themes.

  15. November 21, 2008

:) – Now we all have no noses as well. Looks like, I just have to get used to it.

  16. November 21, 2008

Hi Ellen – well I could make them really teeny ;-) Yeah you might have to deal with it for a bit. Sorry, I’m not ready to change themes just yet. Now I know what Dave’s been going through lol

  17. November 21, 2008

Hi Randy, ya, it is tough work, but luckily the programming side is not done by me :) . I don’t know how he fixed the firefox issue and I don’t want to know either. Been doing a few changes in my site as well, more improvements really – check out the sailor’s lair :) .

  18. November 22, 2008

Hi Ellen – It’s looks like you’ve been real busy with your site. Lot’s of content in a very short time. Good job!!

I see the same issue as before with regards to the Sailor’s Lair, though. Entry Guidelines & Weather Links load but the others don’t. Ironically, it works with IE7 but not the other browsers, such as Firefox (Mac & Windows), Safari & Camino (Mac).

  19. November 22, 2008

Hi Randy – ok thanks for letting me know. Why don’t all the browsers standardize? So irritating. Anyway, I don’t use firefox and the others because I sometimes have problems opening weather programs with it.

I will let you know when it is fixed. Maybe you can test again for me – with Mac?

    Thanks, Ellen

  20. November 22, 2008

Hi Ellen – yes it is irritating, and I’m glad I don’t have to try to code for them. From what little I understand of it, IE is not fully compliant with the standards, but because the have so much of the market they must be accounted for. They basically have their own standard.

I’d be glad to give your site a look. Just let me know when you think it’s fixed.

  21. November 22, 2008

My brother suggests that you activate your “javascripts and Java”. He tried it with firefox and everything works. He also said that there are so many issues with firefox that they don’t work. He also said IE follows the standards and also, he has to always do a workaround, for firefox to work.

Just repeating what he said :) . But I agree that I have problems with a lot of websites when using Firefox. In internet cafes that use this or other browsers, I cannot open some weather websites – and these are official sites of the government.

Thanks Randy for testing it out for me.

  22. November 22, 2008

Hi Ellen – it’s working now, for the most part.

You can let your brother know that it’s not a problem with my “javascripts and Java”, they are enabled.

If you code a site for IE, then it may or may not work elsewhere. It’s as simple as that. Most website developers check several browsers and platforms.

I will have to disagree with him in regards to IE being CSS compliant, though I understand they are working on it with IE8. The last I heard they were the worse in regards to that:

    http://www.webstandards.org/action/acid2/

I fully admit I’m not an expert in this area, so I don’t really want to go back and forth with him on this. This whole browser war has been going on a long time, both with web developers and users. I personally don’t care for IE for a number of reasons, but that’s just my opinion.

Hi Gary – thanks for stopping by and for the kind words. I’m an admirer of your Sun•Star online, too. Mostly read the Davao section. Seems I linked to one of your articles awhile back, about the light bill. Thanks for that.

  25. November 23, 2008

@ Ellen – I’ve found what I think is a partial fix to the gravtars. They should be showing in full height, with the only problem being the author highlight area being indented (for IE7 only). If you could, let me know if that’s what you are seeing also. Thanks for your help and time on this.

  26. November 23, 2008

    YES!! It is fixed!! :)

  27. November 23, 2008

Thanks, Ellen – I’m still trying to find a fix to get the highlight area not to indent, but this should work for now. Thanks again for your help!!

  28. November 23, 2008

OK I fially found enough time to gte over here .. looks like you have it well in hand. Indeed a continual problem between mac and Windoz … from the days of the Apple II, mac typ[ography and screen graphics were always way more sphisticated and better looking thna anyhting on Wondoze. And I was never a Mac owner … but I do have eyes.

There are themes that mitigate the problem but nothing which really cures it … I’m seriously considering buying a mac as my next blogging/learning investment. In the interim I guess you just have to deal with us LCD folks the best you can.

  29. November 23, 2008

Hi Dave – thanks for checking in. I think I have things working well enough for the moment. Still playing with things behind the scenes. Got to get a few admin type things set up, but I’m getting there.

I can see you’ve been busy yourself. I like the latest look of your site. Hope it works for you.

  30. November 26, 2008

nice work on the new design, randy. i like it. everything looks ok on my side (then again, i use a mac).

  31. November 27, 2008

Hi Macky – thanks. I figured you were probably a Mac guy, with the work that you do. Just checked out your blog, congrats again on the move.
