Smoker’s Nails Pulled?
I’m not a smoker. Never have been. I have a difficult time understanding why a person chooses to smoke, given the cost and negative health affects to the body. That said, I believe people should make their own choices and it’s none of my business what those choices are. If it’s one of my immediate family I might make my feelings known, but I’d hardly expect that alone to change their mind.
Smoking has become more than a personal choice in many people’s minds because of the possible damage from second hand smoke. Davao has some pretty tough laws in this regard , and it is upsetting to some to see the laws being ignored, but it’s hard to believe that a person in power would endorse such a extreme and potentially controversial stance as having a violator’s fingernails pulled out with pliers. That’s exactly what Davao City Vice Mayor Sara Duterte has suggested would be appropriate punishment.
Davao has become known as a “safe” city, comparatively speaking, in large part because of the hard line stance of the Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, Sara’s father. I have to wonder if her comments about the violators really reflects how she feels, or this is the persona she feels she must exhibit in order to follow in her father’s footsteps.
I guess being “Politically Correct” is not something one must worry about in the Philippines, yet.
